Skokie — Ch. 22 Art. XIV Rental Unit Registration § 22-510
Registration terminates upon sale
Operative Text
Notwithstanding any provision contained in this Article, Residential Rental Unit Registration shall terminate upon the sale of the Multi-Unit Building or Residential Rental Unit.
Under Skokie's Ch. 22 Art. XIV § 22-510, a Residential Rental Unit Registration does not carry over automatically when a Multi-Unit Building or individual Residential Rental Unit changes ownership — the existing registration ends at the point of sale. This means that after a sale is completed, the property is no longer covered by the prior owner's registration, regardless of any other provisions in Article XIV. A new registration process would be required to bring the property back into compliance under the ordinance.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under § 22-510, operators who acquire a Multi-Unit Building or Residential Rental Unit through purchase should be aware that the seller's Residential Rental Unit Registration does not transfer with the property. Compliant operators typically initiate a new registration with the Village of Skokie promptly after closing to avoid operating without a valid registration. Keeping documentation of the sale date and any registration filings helps demonstrate compliance with Article XIV's requirements.

Section 22-510 establishes that when a rental property is sold, the prior owner's registration terminates — meaning tenants may want to confirm that a new owner has obtained a valid Residential Rental Unit Registration under Article XIV after a sale occurs. If a building appears to be operating without a current registration following a change in ownership, tenants can inquire with the Village of Skokie about the property's registration status. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with Skokie's municipal code can help explain what options may be available when a landlord is not in compliance with registration requirements.
