Plain English

Grand Rapids Chapter 176 Human Rights § 9.973 establishes a severability rule for the chapter as a whole. Under this provision, if any part of the chapter — whether a section, subsection, sentence, clause, or phrase — is struck down by a court as invalid or unconstitutional, that part is treated as legally separate from the rest. The remainder of the chapter continues in full force as though the invalidated portion had never been included.

For Property Managers

For property owners and managers operating under Grand Rapids Chapter 176, § 9.973 means that a successful legal challenge to one part of the Human Rights chapter does not automatically unravel the obligations created by other parts. Compliant operators generally continue to follow all remaining provisions of Chapter 176 even if a court ruling narrows or eliminates a specific section. Staying informed about any court decisions affecting the chapter helps operators understand which requirements remain in effect.

For Tenants

Grand Rapids Ch. 176 § 9.973 is designed to protect the broader set of rights established in the Human Rights chapter from being wiped out by a single court ruling. If a court invalidates one provision, tenants can generally still rely on the protections found in the remaining, unaffected sections of Chapter 176. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with Grand Rapids law can help clarify which provisions remain enforceable following any court decision.
