Plain English

Section 215-26 of the Cohoes Code of Ordinances establishes comprehensive safety standards for fuel gas systems in buildings, covering everything from piping integrity and shutoff valves to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage and high-pressure service connections. The rule requires that gas piping remain gastight and capable of meeting appliance demand, that accessible shutoff valves be present and functional, and that service equipment be protected from damage. Special provisions address gas refrigerators and ranges, high-pressure gas pressure reduction, and specific handling and venting requirements for LPG containers and systems.

For Property Managers

Property owners and managers operating under Cohoes Code ch. 215 § 215-26 generally ensure that all fuel gas piping is regularly inspected for leaks and maintained in gastight condition, with individual shutoff valves installed near each gas appliance outlet. Compliant operators keep gas meters, regulators, and service equipment in protected locations, and verify that high-pressure service connections include the required pressure-reducing devices. For properties using liquefied petroleum gas, operators typically confirm that containers are safely sited, equipped with pressure-relief devices, and that an exterior shutoff valve is accessible and in good working order.

For Tenants

Under Cohoes Code ch. 215 § 215-26, tenants have a right to gas piping systems that are safe, gastight, and equipped with accessible shutoff valves near each gas appliance. If a tenant notices signs of a gas leak, damaged service equipment, or missing shutoff valves, these conditions may constitute a housing code violation that can be reported to the City of Cohoes code enforcement office. Tenants may also wish to consult a local tenant-rights organization to understand how documented violations under this section can be raised in housing proceedings or used to request repairs.
