Section 475-26 of Fulton, N.Y., Code of Ordinances Chapter 475 establishes requirements for safe exit pathways in buildings. Every structure must maintain a clear, unobstructed route from its interior to a legal open space, with doors that can be opened from the inside without a key (with limited exceptions under state fire and building code). Exit signs must be posted, illuminated whenever the building is occupied, and kept in good repair, and the number and capacity of exits must match what was required when the building was constructed or last changed in occupancy.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under § 475-26, compliant property operators routinely inspect all egress pathways to confirm they remain clear and unobstructed, verify that interior-side door hardware allows exit without a key, and ensure that exit signs are functioning and illuminated during all periods of occupancy. Operators also confirm that the number of exits and their capacity meet the standards that applied at the time of the building's construction or most recent change of occupancy, and that no dead-end corridors exist in the exit path. Routine documentation of these inspections supports a record of ongoing compliance with this provision.
