Hudson, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 174 § 174-6
Filing of complaint of discriminatory practice
Operative Text
A. Any person claiming to be aggrieved by an unlawful discriminatory practice may, by themselves, or by their attorney, make, sign and file with the Fair Housing Officer a verified complaint which shall state the name and address of the person or persons alleged to have committed the unlawful discriminatory practice complained of and which shall set forth the particulars thereof and contain such other information as may be requested by the Fair Housing Officer. B. After the filing of the complaint, the Fair Housing Officer shall make a prompt investigation in connection therewith. C. If, in the judgment of the Fair Housing Officer, the circumstances so warrant, it may, at any time after the filing of the complaint, endeavor to eliminate such discriminatory practice by conference, conciliation and persuasion. D. Nothing contained in this article shall be construed as to limit or prohibit investigation by any other governmental unit of competent jurisdiction, nor shall anything contained herein limit any aggrieved party from pursuing any remedy available therefrom or from pursuing a private right of action through the courts. In the event of such a situation, the Fair Housing Office is hereby empowered to place any and all of its material obtained through the investigation at the disposal of such other governmental unit or the individual pursuing a private course of action.
Hudson, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 174 § 174-6 establishes a formal process for reporting alleged housing discrimination in the City of Hudson. Anyone who believes they have been subjected to an unlawful discriminatory practice may file a verified complaint with the Fair Housing Officer, who is then required to investigate promptly. The provision also preserves the right to pursue remedies through other government agencies or through private legal action in court, and the Fair Housing Office may share its investigative materials to support those parallel efforts.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under Hudson, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 174 § 174-6, a complaint of discriminatory practice filed against a property owner or manager triggers a formal investigation by the Fair Housing Officer. Operators who maintain clear, consistent, and non-discriminatory policies and documentation are generally better positioned to respond to any inquiry or conciliation process that may follow. Because the provision also allows complaints to be pursued through other governmental bodies or private litigation, a housing provider may face scrutiny from multiple directions arising from the same set of facts.

Hudson, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 174 § 174-6 gives individuals who believe they have experienced housing discrimination the right to file a verified complaint—personally or through an attorney—with the City of Hudson's Fair Housing Officer. After a complaint is filed, the Fair Housing Officer is required to investigate and may attempt to resolve the matter through conference and conciliation. Importantly, this provision does not limit other options: a person may also pursue a complaint with another government agency of competent jurisdiction or bring a private lawsuit in court, and tenant-rights organizations can help explain what paths may be available.
