For Property Managers

Under ch. 210 § 210-74, the city's housing compliance program is run by the Director of Planning and Development and authorized inspectors, all of whom are required to carry official badges or identification cards. Compliant property operators generally cooperate with credentialed inspectors who present proper identification during inspections, and they maintain properties in accordance with the housing standards that this office is charged with enforcing. Familiarity with the administrative structure described in § 210-74 helps operators understand who has authority to conduct inspections and issue compliance directives.

For Tenants

Section 210-74 of Ithaca's Code of Ordinances means that tenants interacting with city housing inspectors can expect those officials to carry proper identification and to have been lawfully appointed. If a tenant believes housing standards are not being met at their residence, the office of the Director of Planning and Development is the body designated under § 210-74 to receive and act on such concerns. Tenants may also wish to consult a local tenant-rights organization to understand what options are available for raising housing standard complaints.
