Plain English

Kingston, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 333 § 333-11 establishes the process by which the City Code Enforcement Officer identifies and addresses housing standard violations. When a violation is found, a written notice is issued to the responsible party, specifying what must be corrected and within what timeframe. If the violation is not remedied in time—especially when it constitutes a public nuisance or creates unsafe conditions—the City itself may step in to correct it, and the matter may be referred to the Corporation Counsel for prosecution.

For Property Managers

Under Kingston, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 333 § 333-11, compliant property owners and managers generally respond promptly to any notice of violation and order to remedy issued by the Code Enforcement Officer. Operators typically ensure that tenants are made aware of required corrective actions and that violations are resolved within the timeframe specified in the order. Failure to cause tenants to remove a violation within the stated period can result in the matter being forwarded to the Corporation Counsel for prosecution, or the City taking direct remedial action at the owner's potential expense.

For Tenants

Kingston, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 333 § 333-11 outlines how tenants may receive a notice of violation—either by personal service or by posting on the premises—and what obligations follow. Tenants who receive such a notice have a specified time to remedy the identified violation, and the order must also state the window within which an appeal may be taken. Tenants who believe a notice was issued in error or have questions about their rights under this provision may consider contacting a local tenant-rights organization or consulting with a housing attorney to understand available options, including the appeal process described in the order.
