For Property Managers

Operators of rooming houses in Mount Vernon subject to Chapter 211, § 211-5 generally keep track of their license expiration date and submit a renewal application—along with the applicable fee—within the 30-day window before that date. Compliant operators pay all fees directly to the Commissioner and retain the receipts issued as proof of payment. When the character or use of any rooms has changed since the last filing, those changes are documented fully in the renewal application rather than left unreported.

For Tenants

Section 211-5 of Mount Vernon Code Chapter 211 requires that rooming house operators hold a valid, annually renewed license, which can be a useful reference point for tenants living in single-room occupancy housing. If a rooming house appears to be operating without a current license or without disclosing changes in occupancy, tenants may have grounds to raise that issue with the relevant municipal authority or a local tenant-rights organization. Reviewing whether a landlord has met the licensing and renewal requirements under § 211-5 can be one avenue for understanding the legal standing of the premises.
