North Tonawanda, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 51D § 51D-5
Term of rental dwelling unit registration
Operative Text
A rental dwelling unit registration issued pursuant to § 51D-3 shall renew on an annual basis pursuant to the issue date, unless revoked sooner pursuant to § 51D-11 . Within 60 days' prior to the expiration of a rental dwelling unit certificate, the owner shall make written application for a rental dwelling unit registration certificate in accordance with § 51D-3 of this chapter. The term of a rental dwelling unit certificate shall not extend past one year from its date of issuance unless decided on by the Code Enforcement Office.
Under North Tonawanda, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 51D § 51D-5, rental dwelling unit registrations are valid for one year from their date of issuance and renew annually unless revoked earlier under § 51D-11. Owners are required to submit a written renewal application within the 60-day window before a certificate expires. The Code Enforcement Office holds discretion to extend a certificate's term beyond one year, but such an extension is not automatic.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Compliant rental property operators in North Tonawanda track the issuance date of each registration certificate issued under § 51D-5 and submit a written renewal application to the Code Enforcement Office no later than 60 days before that date arrives each year. Maintaining a calendar reminder for each unit's renewal window helps avoid a lapse in registration, which could trigger revocation proceedings under § 51D-11. Any request for a term extension beyond the standard one-year period would need to be directed to and approved by the Code Enforcement Office.

Section 51D-5 of the North Tonawanda Code requires that the rental dwelling unit where a tenant lives be registered and kept current on an annual basis, with the owner responsible for timely renewal. If a tenant has reason to believe a landlord has allowed a registration to lapse or be revoked under § 51D-11, that information may be relevant when raising a housing-code concern with the Code Enforcement Office. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with North Tonawanda housing regulations can help explain what options may be available when a property's registration status is in question.
