Plain English

Oneida, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 77 § 77-43 establishes comprehensive structural and functional standards for chimneys, flues, and gas vents in residential and other buildings. These components must be built and kept in a condition that is structurally sound, smoke-tight, noncombustible, and resistant to the corrosive effects of flue gases. The rule also prohibits shared flue connections between separate tenancies and limits smoke pipe or gas vent connections to a single story per flue, ensuring that combustion byproducts are safely directed to the outside air.

For Property Managers

Property owners and managers subject to Oneida, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 77 § 77-43 generally keep chimneys, flues, and gas vents in a state of good repair — free from cracks, corrosion, and structural deficiencies — and ensure that flue linings can withstand operating temperatures without degradation. Compliant operators verify that prefabricated chimneys are installed per manufacturer's specifications and that masonry chimneys rest on noncombustible foundations. Operators also confirm that no single flue serves fuel-burning equipment or fireplaces belonging to more than one tenancy, and that smoke pipe connections are limited to one story per flue.
