Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-23 establishes safety standards for fireplaces and similar open-fire burning structures. Fireplaces must connect to approved chimneys and be installed so that surrounding combustible materials and structural components are not exposed to unsafe heat levels. The parts of a fireplace directly exposed to flame must be made of heat-resistant materials, and any wood mantels or trim must be positioned and secured so they cannot be ignited by sparks, embers, or conducted heat.

Under Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-23, compliant property operators ensure that any fireplace or open-fire burning structure is connected to a properly approved chimney and installed with adequate clearance from combustible building materials. Operators also verify that hearth linings and flame-exposed components are constructed from materials rated to withstand high temperatures without degrading. Wood mantels and decorative trim are secured at distances and in configurations that prevent ignition from sparks, embers, or heat transfer from the firebox.

Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-23 sets out minimum safety requirements for fireplaces in residential properties, including proper chimney connections, heat-resistant firebox materials, and safely positioned wood mantels. Tenants who observe conditions that appear to fall short of these standards — such as a fireplace lacking an approved chimney connection or a mantel positioned dangerously close to the firebox — may have grounds to report the concern to the City of Rye's code enforcement office.
