For Property Managers

Under Schenectady, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 167 § 167-11, property owners and managers should be aware that the city's enforcement apparatus extends well beyond the Building Inspector alone. Multiple city departments—including Fire, Police, and Public Works—may participate in inspections of rental premises, and the Corporation Counsel stands ready to pursue legal remedies against identified violations. Operators who maintain properties in compliance with city housing standards are generally better positioned when multi-department inspections occur.

For Tenants

Schenectady, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 167 § 167-11 gives tenants context for understanding how the city enforces housing standards on their behalf. When violations are identified, the Building Inspector can draw on multiple city departments for inspections and can refer matters to the Corporation Counsel for legal action, including abatement or correction of conditions. Tenants who believe their housing conditions violate city standards may consider contacting the Building Inspector's office to initiate a complaint, or reaching out to a local tenant-rights organization to understand available options.
