Schenectady, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 167 § 167-44 establishes maintenance and safety standards for elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators in multiple dwellings. Equipment must be kept free of physical and fire hazards, wired to National Electrical Code standards, and fitted with capacity signs and emergency signaling devices. Hoistways, pits, and machine rooms must be kept clean and free of refuse, flammable liquids, and unnecessary stored materials, and no one may disable required safety or electrical protective devices except during authorized testing, inspection, or maintenance.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Property owners and managers operating elevators, dumbwaiters, or escalators in multiple dwellings subject to § 167-44 of the Schenectady Code generally keep all equipment wired to National Electrical Code standards, post durable rated-capacity signs in conspicuous locations, and ensure emergency signaling devices are functional. Compliant operators routinely clear hoistways, pits, and machine rooms of refuse, grease, oil, and non-essential stored materials, and never store flammable liquids in machine rooms. Safety and electrical protective devices are left fully operative at all times, with any temporary disabling limited strictly to the duration of authorized tests, inspections, or maintenance activities.
