Plain English

Syracuse Rev. Gen. Ord. ch. 27, art. 12 § 27-182 establishes both criminal and civil consequences for property owners or proprietors who fail to correct code violations after receiving an official notice or order. On the criminal side, a conviction can result in a fine between $50 and $150, up to 15 days of imprisonment, or both, for each offense. On the civil side, a separate cumulative penalty of $100 per day accrues for each distinct violation starting from the correction deadline, and the city's corporation counsel is authorized to pursue that money in court or seek an injunction to stop unlawful operation of the property.

For Property Managers

Under Syracuse Rev. Gen. Ord. ch. 27, art. 12 § 27-182, compliant property owners and managers treat every notice or order from the director of code enforcement as a firm deadline, correcting each cited violation before that deadline expires. Operators who miss the deadline expose themselves to both criminal prosecution—carrying fines and potential jail time per offense—and a civil penalty that compounds at $100 per day for every separate unresolved violation. Maintaining thorough records of completed repairs and communicating promptly with the code enforcement office are practices generally associated with avoiding the escalating consequences this provision authorizes.

For Tenants

Syracuse Rev. Gen. Ord. ch. 27, art. 12 § 27-182 gives tenants important context about the enforcement tools available when a landlord ignores a code-violation order: the city can pursue criminal charges, daily civil penalties, and even court-ordered injunctions against continued unlawful operation. Tenants who believe their landlord has received a notice or order but failed to act by the stated deadline may consider contacting Syracuse's code enforcement office to inquire about the status of any open violations. Tenant-rights organizations and legal aid services familiar with Syracuse housing law can help residents understand how this provision's enforcement mechanisms may be relevant to their housing situation.
