For Property Managers

Under Syracuse Rev. Gen. Ord. ch. 27, art. 3 § 27-30, compliant property operators keep all exit pathways free of obstructions at all times and ensure that exits are properly constructed and proportioned for safe emergency evacuation. Owners of one- and two-family dwellings verify that emergency egress openings meet the specifications set out in the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. Operators of larger or multi-unit structures ensure that all exits carry the appropriate approvals and remain functional and accessible.

For Tenants

Syracuse Rev. Gen. Ord. ch. 27, art. 3 § 27-30 gives occupants the right to safe, unobstructed exits from their building, including a compliant emergency egress opening in one- and two-family dwellings. If exits are blocked, improperly maintained, or otherwise deficient, tenants may report the condition to the City of Syracuse's code enforcement office. Tenant-rights organizations can also provide guidance on available options, including raising a code violation as part of a housing complaint.
