Property owners and managers operating multiple dwellings in Watervliet are generally expected to maintain elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators in full compliance with ch. 175 § 175-50, which covers everything from hazard-free conditions to proper signage showing rated capacity. Compliant operators typically schedule regular inspections, keep hoistways, pits, and machine rooms clean and uncluttered, and ensure that emergency signaling devices remain functional. Machine rooms are kept free of flammable liquids and materials unrelated to elevator or dumbwaiter maintenance, and safety devices are never rendered inoperative outside of authorized testing or maintenance windows.

Under Watervliet, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 175 § 175-50, tenants in multiple dwellings have an interest in elevators, dumbwaiters, and escalators that are safe, properly labeled, and equipped with working emergency signals. If a tenant observes conditions that appear to violate this provision—such as missing capacity signs, blocked hoistways, or disabled safety devices—they may consider documenting the issue and reporting it to the appropriate local code enforcement or housing authority.
