Plain English

Under D.C. Code § 42-3301 et seq. § 42-3305, the remedies available through this chapter are not the only options open to apartment tenants. A tenant who has a claim against an owner, agent, lessor, manager, or company is not limited to whatever this chapter provides and may also pursue separate legal or equitable actions. This provision preserves the full range of remedies that might otherwise exist under District of Columbia law.

For Property Managers

Property owners and managers operating under D.C. Code § 42-3301 et seq. § 42-3305 should be aware that a tenant's use of remedies within this chapter does not foreclose additional claims in court or through other legal channels. Compliant operators generally maintain thorough records of all communications, maintenance actions, and financial transactions precisely because disputes may extend beyond the chapter's own enforcement mechanisms. Understanding that multiple legal avenues may run concurrently helps operators assess their broader obligations.

For Tenants

D.C. Code § 42-3301 et seq. § 42-3305 makes clear that tenants are not confined to the remedies this chapter alone provides when they have a grievance against an owner, agent, lessor, manager, or company. Tenants may have the option to pursue civil court actions, equitable relief, or other legal remedies in addition to any chapter-specific complaint process. Tenant-rights organizations in the District can help residents understand the full range of options that may be available in a given situation.
