D.C. Code tit. 42 § 42-3609
The provisions of this subchapter shall not limit the availability of other remedies under law or other equitable relief whether or not an adequate remedy exists at law.

Plain English

D.C. Code § 42-3601 et seq. § 42-3609 establishes that the remedies available under this subchapter are not the only remedies available to parties in a housing dispute. Other legal remedies and equitable relief remain accessible regardless of whether an adequate remedy at law already exists. In other words, this provision preserves the full range of legal options that might otherwise be available under District of Columbia law.

For Property Managers

Property owners and managers operating under D.C. Code § 42-3601 et seq. § 42-3609 should be aware that the remedies outlined in this subchapter do not cap or replace other legal or equitable claims that may be brought against them. Compliant operators generally maintain thorough records and follow all applicable housing regulations, recognizing that a tenant or other party may pursue multiple avenues of relief simultaneously. Understanding that this provision preserves additional remedies can inform how landlords approach compliance and dispute resolution.

For Tenants

Under D.C. Code § 42-3601 et seq. § 42-3609, tenants are not limited to only the remedies spelled out in this subchapter when addressing a housing dispute. Other legal claims and equitable relief — such as injunctions or other court-ordered remedies — may remain available even if a remedy at law already exists. Tenants who believe their rights have been violated may wish to consult a tenant-rights organization or legal aid provider to understand the full range of options that may be available to them.
