D.C. Mun. Regs. tit. 14 et seq. § 14-901 sets out ongoing fire-safety obligations for housing operators and owners in the District. Compliant operators routinely inspect and service fire extinguishers and fire-protective construction to keep them in operable, good-repair condition. When a fire inspector issues a violation report for a property with two or more units, compliant owners forward a copy to the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs within five days, complete all required corrections within fifteen days of the report's issuance, and submit written certification of those corrections to the Department.

D.C. Mun. Regs. tit. 14 et seq. § 14-901 establishes fire-safety standards that housing operators and owners must meet, including maintaining working fire extinguishers and sound fire-protective construction. Tenants in multi-unit dwellings have an interest in knowing that their owner is required to report fire-code violations to the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and to certify corrections within fifteen days. Tenants who believe these obligations are not being met may consider contacting the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, raising the issue with a tenant-rights organization, or exploring whether a violation can be raised as a defense or basis for a complaint in a relevant proceeding.
