Cal. Civ. Code § 407.005
As used in this chapter, unless the context clearly requires otherwise, the term "digital electronic equipment" shall mean any product that depends for its functioning, in whole or in part, on digital electronics embedded in or attached to the product; provided however, that such term shall not include any motor vehicle manufacturer, manufacturer of motor vehicle equipment, or motor vehicle dealer, or any product or service of a motor vehicle manufacturer, manufacturer of motor vehicle equipment, or motor vehicle dealer acting in that capacity.

Plain English

Missouri Revised Statutes §§ 407.005–407.145 establishes a working definition of 'digital electronic equipment' for the purposes of the chapter. Under this definition, the term covers any product whose operation depends—fully or partly—on embedded or attached digital electronics. Notably, the definition carves out motor vehicles, motor vehicle equipment, and related dealers and manufacturers, meaning those products and services fall outside the chapter's scope.

For Property Managers

For property owners and managers, Mo. Rev. Stat. §§ 407.005–407.145 is relevant when determining whether electronic devices or systems used in rental properties—such as smart locks, thermostats, or appliances—fall under the chapter's provisions. Because the definition of 'digital electronic equipment' is broad, most digitally dependent devices in a rental context would likely be covered, while motor-vehicle-related products would not. Operators generally familiarize themselves with this definitional boundary to understand which equipment may be subject to the chapter's broader requirements.

For Tenants

Tenants should be aware that Mo. Rev. Stat. §§ 407.005–407.145 sets the foundational definition that determines which products are regulated under this chapter. If a dispute arises involving a digitally dependent product in a rental unit—such as a smart appliance or electronic access system—this definition helps clarify whether the chapter's protections apply. Tenants seeking to understand their rights in connection with such equipment may consult a tenant-rights organization or legal aid service for general guidance on how this definition interacts with other provisions in the chapter.
