R.I. Gen. Laws ch. 6-13.1 § 6-13.1-22
Any consumer who requests disclosure of his or her credit file from a credit bureau
shall be entitled to have mailed to the consumer a copy of the information in the
files of the credit bureau that pertains to the consumer at the time of the consumer's
request for disclosure within four (4) working days of the request. The credit bureau
may impose a reasonable charge for the report, but that charge shall not exceed eight
dollars ($8.00) per report. The maximum charge for the report may be raised annually
not to exceed the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The copy shall be furnished
without charge if the request for a copy of the report is the result of a consumer
being notified that adverse action has been taken on a credit application based on
the credit report, provided the request for the report is made within sixty (60) days
of receipt of the notice.

Under Rhode Island General Laws § 6-13.1-22, any consumer who asks a credit bureau for a copy of their credit file must receive that copy by mail within four working days of the request. The credit bureau may charge a fee for this service, but the fee is capped at $8.00 per report, with annual adjustments permitted only up to the rate of CPI increase. If a consumer was denied credit or otherwise faced adverse action based on their credit report, and they request their report within 60 days of receiving that notice, the credit bureau must provide the report at no charge.

For Property Managers

While § 6-13.1-22 primarily governs credit bureaus rather than landlords directly, property managers who use credit reports as part of tenant screening should be aware that applicants have a statutory right to obtain their own credit file under this provision. When an adverse action—such as a rental denial—is taken based on a credit report, the applicant is entitled to a free copy of that report if requested within 60 days of receiving notice of the adverse action. Operators who provide proper adverse-action notices help ensure that the process aligns with the consumer protections established under this chapter.

For Tenants

Under § 6-13.1-22, Rhode Island consumers have the right to request a copy of their credit file from a credit bureau and receive it within four working days, with the fee capped at $8.00 per report. If you received a notice that adverse action was taken on a credit application—such as a rental denial—because of your credit report, you are entitled to receive a free copy of that report if you request it within 60 days of that notice. Tenants who believe these rights have been violated may consider contacting a tenant-rights organization, a consumer protection agency, or reviewing options available under Rhode Island's consumer protection framework in chapter 6-13.1.
