27 V.S.A. § ___ § 1336
Relocation costs
Operative Text
(a) The declarant shall pay the actual documented cost of relocation, not to exceed $1,000.00, to any tenant entitled to receive notice under section 1333 of this title who does not purchase the unit that he or she occupies or another unit in the same building or buildings. (b) Relocation costs shall be payable within 10 days after the date the tenant vacates the unit; provided, however, that no tenant is eligible for relocation costs unless: (1) all rent due and payable has been paid by the tenant prior to the date on which the unit is vacated; and (2) the tenant has voluntarily vacated the unit on or before the expiration of half the applicable notice period. (Added 1985, No. 175 (Adj. Sess.), § 5.)
Under 27 V.S.A. ch. 15 § 1336, when a condominium declarant converts a rental building and a tenant who received the required notice under § 1333 chooses not to purchase a unit in that building, the declarant must reimburse that tenant's actual, documented moving expenses up to $1,000. The payment is due within 10 days after the tenant vacates. To qualify, the tenant must have paid all rent owed before moving out and must have voluntarily vacated on or before the halfway point of the applicable notice period.

Declarants overseeing a condominium conversion covered by 27 V.S.A. ch. 15 § 1336 generally track and document each eligible tenant's relocation expenses and issue reimbursement—up to $1,000—within 10 days of the tenant's move-out date. Operators typically verify that the tenant has cleared all outstanding rent and has vacated voluntarily within the first half of the notice period before releasing funds. Maintaining clear records of rent ledgers, move-out dates, and submitted relocation receipts supports compliance with this provision.

Under 27 V.S.A. ch. 15 § 1336, tenants who received a conversion notice under § 1333 and choose not to buy a unit in the building may be entitled to up to $1,000 in reimbursement for actual, documented moving costs. To preserve eligibility, a tenant generally needs to have paid all rent due and to have moved out voluntarily no later than the midpoint of the applicable notice period, with payment owed within 10 days of vacating. Tenants who believe a declarant has failed to pay relocation costs as required may consider contacting a tenant-rights organization or consulting with a housing attorney to understand available options.
