1-21-1304.Wyoming Statute § 1-21-1302 establishes the key definitions that apply throughout the domestic abuse and sexual violence provisions found at W.S. 1-21-1301 through 1-21-1304. The terms 'domestic abuse,' 'landlord,' 'sexual violence,' and 'tenant' each carry specific legal meanings within this act, with 'domestic abuse' drawing its definition from Wyoming's broader protective statute and 'sexual violence' encompassing acts of sexual assault, abuse, and stalking as defined in the Wyoming Criminal Code. These definitions set the boundaries for who is covered and what conduct is addressed by the surrounding provisions.

Under § 1-21-1302, a 'landlord' for purposes of W.S. 1-21-1301 through 1-21-1304 includes not only property owners but also their authorized agents who handle rental or leasing matters. Operators who delegate leasing responsibilities to property managers or agents should be aware that those agents are equally bound by the obligations and limitations this act imposes on landlords. Understanding these defined terms helps property owners and managers correctly identify when the act's protections apply to a tenancy situation.

Section § 1-21-1302 defines 'tenant' as any person who has entered into an oral or written lease as the lessee, meaning both formal written agreements and informal oral arrangements can qualify someone for the protections offered under W.S. 1-21-1301 through 1-21-1304. Tenants who have experienced domestic abuse or sexual violence as defined in this provision may have rights under the surrounding statutes, including potential lease-related protections. Tenant-rights organizations in Wyoming can help individuals understand whether their specific rental arrangement and circumstances fall within these definitions.
